This Wolverine MTW Fossil Dig 2 is based on the XM177 E2, also known as the Colt Commando: an iconic carbine from the Vietnam War-era. The limited-edition series consists of only 200 replicas, making them very unique and in high demand.
The shortened version of the M16 came from necessity, especially for units that were conducting special operations. For these operations the M16 was simply not very suitable despite its low weight, as its length was considerable. This made it unwieldy in the jungle and urban environments, where engagements usually occurred at short ranges and manoeuvrability turned out to be of great importance. The XM177 E2 is the further developed variant of the experimental series, which was a response to the necessity of a more compact rifle. It is also the predecessor of the iconic M4, one of the most popular firearms of the past decades. This makes it a logical choice for the second MTW Fossils series by Wolverine.
Most noticeable is the Dig 2’s exterior. Not only does it have the classic carry handle which is integrated in the upper receiver, it also matches the real XM177 E2 in detail. This is the case with the long moderator on the barrel, but also with the small ring around the barrel right behind it. This ring allows for the mounting of a grenade launcher and rifle grenades and was one of the differences between the XM177 E1 and the E2. The typical collapsible stock, especially developed for the Colt Commando, along with the handguard, are also exact copies of the real steal variant.
Internally, the MTW Fossil Dig 2 XM177 E2 features high-quality parts, as is always the case with Wolverine. An Inferno XTS HPA engine together with the BLINC Bluetooth FCU (Fire Control Unit) offers endless possibilities for tuning and customisation. By connecting the BLINC FCU with the app, numerous settings can be adjusted using a smartphone. Examples are the rate of fire, dwell (how long the valve remains open after firing), but also the fire modes, for instance. There is also a sleep mode in order to preserve battery life when the replica is not in use.
